Ice box cookies have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. These simple yet delicious cookies were originally created as a convenient way to have homemade treats on hand at all times. The name “ice box cookies” comes from the method of storing the dough in the refrigerator or icebox to chill and firm up before slicing and baking.
Traditionally made with basic ingredients like flour, sugar, butter, and flavorings, ice box cookies became popular during the Great Depression when households had to make the most of what they had. Over the years, countless variations and flavor combinations have been created, making them a versatile and customizable treat for any occasion.
