Paul Lynde, the iconic comedian and actor known for his sharp wit and memorable roles on shows like Bewitched and Hollywood Squares, was also associated with a unique beef stew recipe that reflects the convenience-oriented cooking style of mid-20th-century America. This dish, often referred to as “Paul Lynde’s Beef Stew,” is a testament to the era’s penchant for using canned ingredients and set-it-and-forget-it cooking methods.
A Glimpse into the Recipe
The recipe calls for combining lean stew meat with an assortment of canned vegetables, including diced carrots, small onions, tomatoes, tiny peas, potatoes, and green beans. Additional ingredients like beef consommé, minute tapioca, brown sugar, prepared bread crumbs, a bay leaf, white wine, salt, and pepper are mixed in. The mixture is then baked in a covered dish at a low temperature (250°F) for six to seven hours, allowing the flavors to meld together without the need for stirring.

A Culinary Time Capsule
While modern palates might favor fresh ingredients, revisiting Paul Lynde’s Beef Stew offers a nostalgic glimpse into the culinary practices of the past. It’s a simple yet satisfying dish that captures the essence of an era when convenience and comfort food went hand in hand.
For those interested in experiencing a piece of culinary history, this recipe provides an opportunity to taste a dish that, while humble, carries with it the charm of a bygone time.
