With the right techniques, you can achieve that perfect crispy crust, gooey cheese, and flavorful toppings—all from the comfort of your own kitchen. Why Make Pizza at Home?

While ordering takeout is convenient, making pizza at home has its own advantages:

  • Customization: You control the ingredients, so you can make it exactly how you like it.
  • Healthier Options: Use fresh, high-quality ingredients and adjust portion sizes to fit your dietary needs.
  • Cost-Effective: Making pizza at home is much cheaper than buying it from a pizzeria.
  • Fun Activity: Perfect for family nights, date nights, or even solo cooking adventures.

Choosing and Layering Toppings

The beauty of homemade pizza is the freedom to get creative with toppings. Here are some ideas:

  • Classic: Mozzarella, fresh basil, and a drizzle of olive oil.
  • Meaty: Pepperoni, sausage, bacon, and ham.
  • Veggie: Mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, spinach, and olives.
  • Unique: BBQ chicken, pineapple, feta cheese, or even an egg cracked on top.

Baking the Perfect Pizza

For that crispy, pizzeria-style crust, follow these baking tips:

  • Preheat your oven to the highest temperature (450–500°F or 230–260°C) for at least 30 minutes before baking.
  • Use a pizza stone or baking steel to mimic the heat distribution of a pizza oven.
  • Roll out your dough thin for a crispier crust or keep it thick for a chewy texture.
  • Bake on a preheated surface for 10–15 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.

Homemade Pizza

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4-ounce packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water about 110 degrees
  • Pinch of sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil plus more for coating bowl
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more if needed
  • Cornmeal for dusting if needed

Instructions

  • Combine yeast, water, and sugar in a large bowl and stir well to combine. Set aside until foamy, for about 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Add salt, olive oil, and 1 1/2 cups flour to yeast mixture, and mix well to thoroughly combine. Add 1 cup flour and mix well with your hands, working to incorporate flour little by little. The dough should be slightly sticky to the touch. Transfer dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead it for at least 5 and up to 7 minutes, adding more flour as needed to form a smooth and elastic dough that is not sticky.
  • Lightly oil a 2- or 3-quart bowl, place dough in it, and turn dough to coat it with oil. Cover bowl with a damp towel and let dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size and ready to bake, usually at least 1 hour.
  • While your pizza dough is rising, prep your desired toppings.
  • Divide in two. Knead each ball until smooth and elastic and shape into flattened circle. Spread with fingers in 2 lightly oiled 10” pizza pans. Let rise 15 minutes at room temperature.
  • Spread sauce on dough. Top with desired toppings. Top with cheese.
  • Preheat oven to 230 degrees Celsius (450 degrees Fahrenheit) Cook on bottom rack of oven for about 20 minutes or until crust is cooked.
  • Make: 2 large pizzas.
