She trained as an opera singer and studied at the Chicago Musical College, hoping to make it to the Metropolitan Opera. However, when that dream didn’t materialize, she turned to theater, eventually making her way to Broadway. Hollywood soon took notice of her grace and talent, leading to her first film role in Leathernecking (1930).

She shined in romantic dramas, earning five Academy Award nominations for Cimarron (1931), Theodora Goes Wild (1936), The Awful Truth (1937), Love Affair (1939), and I Remember Mama (1948). Her comedic timing was impeccable in The Awful Truth, where she played opposite Cary Grant in a witty screwball romance that became a defining film of the genre.
